After years of traveling across the continent, we’ve found that many of the most memorable moments happen when you skip the expensive tours and look for the local, under-the-radar gems that don’t show up in most guidebooks.
Here are some of the best things to do in Europe for free that we’ve personally enjoyed.

Eat Michelin-Star Food for Free in Spain
San Sebastián is known for its incredible food scene.
But once a year you can taste it without spending a cent.
During the Gastronomika festival in October, world-class chefs give out free samples at street events. We’ve had dishes here that would cost hundreds in a fine dining restaurant. For zero euros.
Soak in Budapest’s Free Dip
Budapest is famous for its bathhouses. They range from luxurious and expensive to moderately priced.
But you don’t have to pay for a ticket to enjoy the warmth and water.
Along the Danube, near Római-part, there’s a warm beach where locals gather to relax. A well-developed beach infrastructure includes toilets, diaper changing station and showers, as well as free drinking water and sunbeds for rent. Safety is ensured by lifeguards and a first aid team stationed on the shore.
It’s open-air, completely free, and just as relaxing as the paid spots.
Visit the Vatican Museums Without Paying
On the last Sunday of every month, the Vatican Museums, including the Sistine Chapel, open their doors for free.
While it is busier than other days, the savings can be worth it.

Watch the Changing of the Guard in London
The Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace is one of London’s most iconic and time-honored ceremonies, drawing crowds from around the world.
It takes place when the King’s Guard hands over responsibility for protecting the palace to a new guard in a display of precise military tradition. Dressed in their famous red tunics and tall bearskin hats, the guards march in formation to the sound of a regimental band playing everything from military marches to surprising pop tunes.
The ceremony, which lasts about 45 minutes, is free to watch and usually takes place on Mondays, Wednesday and Friday at 11:00, though schedules can change due to weather or royal events, so it’s worth checking ahead before you go.
We’ve watched it more than once, and it’s always impressive. And completely free.
Get Panoramic Views of Paris at Galeries Lafayette
The department store Galeries Lafayette is worth a stop for its stunning Art Nouveau glass dome.
But the real gem is the free rooftop terrace. From this vantage point, you get sweeping views of Paris landmarks including the Eiffel Tower, the ornate façade of the Opéra Garnier, and the hilltop Sacré-Cœur – all without spending a cent on an observation deck ticket.
And, of course, after taking in the view you can do some chic shopping!
See the Crown Jewels of Scotland for Free
On St. Andrew’s Day (November 30), Edinburgh Castle throws open its gates with free entry for all visitors – a tradition that celebrates Scotland’s national day.
This means you can explore one of the country’s most famous landmarks without paying the usual ticket price.
Even better, this includes access to the Honours of Scotland (Scotland’s Crown Jewels) and the Stone of Destiny, both housed inside the Crown Room. These treasures date back centuries and have been used in the coronation of Scottish monarchs since the 15th century.
On a normal day, you’d pay to see them, but on St. Andrew’s Day, you can walk the same halls royalty once did, take in sweeping views over the city from Castle Rock, and explore the castle’s chapels, war memorials, and military museums. All for free.
It’s one of the few opportunities each year to experience the full grandeur of Edinburgh Castle without spending a penny.
It’s one of the rare times you can see them without the usual ticket price.
Visit the Louvre for Free on Bastille Day
On July 14, Bastille Day, the Louvre offers free admission, giving you the chance to explore the world’s largest art museum without paying the usual €17 entry fee.
It’s a rare opportunity to wander through its vast galleries, from ancient Egyptian artifacts to Renaissance masterpieces, at no cost. You can stand in front of the Mona Lisa, admire the Venus de Milo, and take in the grandeur of the museum’s glass pyramid without opening your wallet.
Just be prepared for bigger crowds than usual, as both locals and tourists take advantage of this national holiday perk.
Enjoy Free Wine Festivals in Germany’s Rhine Valley
Every year between August and October villages like Rüdesheim and Bacharach host wine festivals that fill the towns with guests eager to try amazing German wine.
Entry to the festival is typically free and sometimes even free tastings are offered.
You can spend spend hours listening to bands and sipping local wine all without paying an entry fee.
