Most people have no idea these are even options, but they’ve come in handy again and again.
Better Pillows or Blankets
If the standard pillow feels flat or the blanket is scratchy, you don’t have to suffer through it.
Many hotels stock a variety of pillow options including firm, soft, hypoallergenic, and even memory foam. Some offer alternative blankets like cotton or down-alternative.
It only takes one call to the front desk to sleep way better.
A Mini Fridge On Request
If your room doesn’t come with a fridge, you might still be able to get one.
We’ve asked for fridges when traveling with medication, leftovers, or groceries and usually received one free of charge.
This perk is rarely advertised, but most hotels have a few extras available.
Chargers and Adapters You Can Borrow
We’ve forgotten chargers more than once or brought the wrong plug for a new country.
Instead of buying another, ask the front desk. Hotels often have a whole bin of chargers and international adapters from past guests.
They’re usually happy to loan you one during your stay. Just be sure tor return them at the end of your stay or they may charge you for them.
Forgotten Toiletries Are Usually Available
Most hotels have basic toiletries behind the desk that go beyond shampoo and soap.
We’ve asked for toothpaste, toothbrushes, razors, deodorant, nail files, and even sewing kits.
It’s one less trip to the store and usually totally free.
Umbrellas for Rainy Days
Many hotels have a stash of umbrellas they’ll loan out when it rains.
They’re almost never in the room, but a quick trip to the front desk, concierge, or doorman can save your outfit and your plans.

Microwaves are rarely in standard hotel rooms, but that doesn’t mean they’re off-limits.
Some hotels will bring one to your room on request.

Some hotels, especially boutique or family-friendly ones, have board games, card decks, puzzles, or books at the front desk.
We’ve borrowed everything from Uno to Scrabble, which came in handy on rainy days or quiet nights in.

We love to watch US TV shows while we travel the world.
If you want to watch your own shows on the hotel TV without fumbling with unfamiliar remotes, ask for an HDMI cable.
Plug it into your laptop and stream Netflix, Hulu, or Prime Video easily.
Not all hotels lend them, but when they do, it’s a simple way to feel at home.
Extra Safety Items for Peace of Mind
Some hotels keep night lights, portable locks, and security door stoppers available upon request.
These are especially helpful for solo travelers or families with kids.
We didn’t know this was a thing until a front desk offered it to us during a late check-in.
Now we always ask.
