Here are seven of the most unique travel experiences we’ve found around the world.
Waltz at a Palace Ball in Vienna
Every winter, Vienna transforms into a real-life fairytale with more than 400 formal balls.
Many are open to the public, including the Johann Strauss Ball that we attended.
The dress code is strict: black tie for men and full-length gowns for women.
Matt rented a tux. Lisa found a gorgeous gown for $20 at a secondhand shop in Vienna, where ball season takes over the windows.
In fact, there are so many ball gowns at second hand shops in Vienna during ball season that Lisa had a hard time choosing one. So she bought three! After the ball she re-donated them to the charity-run second hand shop.

Walking into a chandelier-lit ballroom to waltz in a palace is a once-in-a-lifetime memory. It’s one of our favorite travel moments ever.
Be a Dolphin Trainer for a Day in Roatán
In Roatán, Honduras, you can spend a day shadowing marine biologists at a dolphin facility.
You get to help with training sessions, observe health checks, and see the behind-the-scenes work that most visitors never get to experience.
It’s a rare chance to get close to these animals in a setting that focuses on education and care.
Train Like a Samurai in Kyoto
The Samurai Ninja museum in Kyoto offers private training sessions in real dojos where you learn katana sword techniques from expert martial artists.
Wearing traditional gear, you’ll practice the stance, movement, and respect that are part of samurai culture.
You’ll leave with sore arms and a deep appreciation for the discipline required.
Row Your Own Gondola in Venice
Instead of sitting back for a tourist gondola ride, we took a lesson from a licensed gondolier on how to navigate Venice’s canals.
Standing at the back and steering with the oar is trickier than it looks, but there’s nothing like gliding through the water under your own power.
Be a Zookeeper for a Day in Sydney
At Taronga Zoo, you can work alongside the animal care team to prepare food, clean enclosures, and feed animals like giraffes, lemurs, and elephants.
You’ll come away with dirty shoes, incredible photos, and a new respect for the people who care for wildlife every day.
Bathe Rescue Elephants in Chiang Mai
In Thailand, we visited a reputable elephant sanctuary where rides are banned, and the focus is on rehabilitation.
We spent the day feeding the elephants, walking with them to the river, and helping bathe them.
It’s a humbling experience to stand beside these gentle giants and learn their stories.
Blend Your Own Wine in Bordeaux
In the wine capital of France, you can join a workshop where we learned how to create our own custom blend.
Guided by winemakers, you adjust the flavors, bottle your wine, and design your own label. Bringing that bottle home feels like bringing back a piece of the trip itself.
These are the kinds of travel moments we never forget. And the ones that remind us why we keep exploring.
